Renovation and Assimilation: God's Blueprint for Your Life

Have you ever felt like your life needs a complete makeover? Like you're living in a spiritual "fixer-upper" that desperately needs renovation? The truth is, we all need serious renovation in our lives. The sin problem means we're all born with broken character and immorality - perfection doesn't come naturally to anyone, but sin does.

Yet God loves us so much that He sent Jesus to save us, renovate us, restore us, and welcome us into His holy family as children of God. This transformation involves two crucial processes: renovation and assimilation.

What Does It Mean to Be God's Building?

Many people spend their lives investing in religious buildings and structures, thinking that's what matters to God. But Scripture reveals a profound truth: you are God's building.

"For we are God's fellow workers, his servants, working together. You are God's cultivated field, his garden, his vineyard. God's building you." - 1 Corinthians 3:9

This changes everything. God doesn't live in man-made buildings - you are His temple. Your body is the sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who lives within you. God wants to live with you 24/7, not just see you on Sundays.

Why Do We Need Both Renovation and Assimilation?

Getting saved from your past is one thing - that's renovation. But getting saved for your destiny requires assimilation. It's like receiving beautiful new granite countertops but then feeling too unworthy to use your own kitchen.

Many believers struggle with this. They've been renovated by God's grace but haven't learned to assimilate into their new identity as children of God. They still talk and act like the old broken-down version of themselves instead of embracing who they've become in Christ.

What Can We Learn from the Prodigal Son?

The prodigal son story is the ultimate renovation and assimilation reality show. When the son was in the pig pen, he needed to be "unbuilt" - broken down like a caterpillar in a cocoon before transformation could occur.

The key moment came when he "came to himself" and took responsibility. He practiced a speech of humility, owning his sin and acknowledging he wasn't worthy to be called a son. But when the father saw him coming, he ran to meet him with love, restoration, and celebration.

The father's pronouncement and celebration acted as a "congealing agent" to solidify the boy's liquid state into a forever son - not a trapped, entitled prodigal.

How Does God's Renovation Process Work?

God is the expert builder, designer, architect, and demo specialist. We might know how to stack stones, but God makes us living stones. The renovation process isn't always comfortable - there will be dust flying and uncomfortable days when you have to let go of old habits and ways of thinking.

"For we are his workmanship, his own masterwork, a work of art even, created in Christ Jesus, reborn from above, spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used for good works, which God prepared for us beforehand." - Ephesians 2:10

God wants to do "exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us" (Ephesians 3:20). But He needs your permission - your permits - to allow His power to work in you.

What Does Assimilation Look Like?

Assimilation means learning to live as who you really are - a child of God. It means:

  • Taking responsibility and learning the language of God's kingdom (faith talk)
  • Stopping the old "broken down house" talk
  • Recognizing your priceless intrinsic value as God's workmanship
  • Stepping into your healing, answers, and wisdom saying "I'm a child of God and I belong here"

You have a new citizenship to assimilate into. You're no longer defined by your nationality, gender, or skin color - you're a child of God bought with Jesus' blood.

Why Is Personal Responsibility Important?

God will not override your will or self-determination. You must permit His work in your life. The prodigal son had to repent and humble himself - God wouldn't do that for him.

Personal responsibility is intrinsic to personal relationships. When you redistribute your responsibility to religious crowds or organizations, you lose your authority. God can't save you when you reallocate your trust away from Him.

"Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God that he may exalt you." - 1 Peter 5:6

What Comes After Renovation and Assimilation?

Rejuvenation! God wants to make you youthful again, to give you new vigor. "God satisfies your mouth with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagles" (Psalm 103:5).

The repairs in your family, marriage, and career fundamentally begin in your heart, not in your performance. God works from the inside out. Your heart renovation produces your life transformation.

Life Application

This week, examine areas of your life where you've been renovated by God but haven't fully assimilated into your new identity. Stop talking and acting based on who you were and start embracing who you are as God's workmanship. Give God permission to continue His renovation work in your heart, knowing that He wants to do exceedingly abundantly above all you can ask or think.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I living like the old broken-down version of myself or like God's masterwork?
  • What areas of my life am I withholding from God's renovation process?
  • How can I better assimilate into my identity as a child of God this week?
  • Where do I need to take more personal responsibility in my relationship with God?

Remember, you were made for home - God's family. It's time to step into your renovated life and say with confidence: "I'm a child of God, and I belong here."
