How to Retain the Life God Has Given You

Many people today are losing their peace, their identity, and their sense of purpose. The reason might not be what you think. It is not simply about what we lack. It is about what we allow, what we tolerate, and what we choose to believe. This is a message about holding on to what God has freely given us, and why His absolutes are the key to doing it.

What Does It Mean to "Retain" in Your Faith?

To retain means to keep in possession, to hold secure, and to keep in mind and memory. God has given every person life, identity, and the freedom to choose. But those gifts can be lost when we make choices that contradict the truth of His Word.

Deuteronomy 30:19 puts it plainly: "I call heaven and earth to witness this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curses. Therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live." God is not vague about this. The choice is real, and so are the consequences.

Why Are People Losing What God Has Given Them?

Generationally, the choices of our ancestors have added beliefs, habits, and traditions that contradict God's absolutes. The further a society drifts from those absolutes, the more it suffers unnecessarily from the consequences of ignoring them.

As G.K. Chesterton wrote in 1923: "It's the first effect of not believing in God that you lose your common sense." When people reject absolutes, they do not end up believing in nothing. They end up believing in anything. The void gets filled with dangerous substitutes, and the result is an inability to retain joy, peace, health, identity, or even basic common sense.

What Happens When We Remove God's Word From Our Lives?

History offers a sobering example. For much of America's early history, the Bible was treated as the foundation of education and public life. During that period, the United States led the world in scientific and medical advancement, earning more Nobel Prizes in science and medicine than any other nation in the first 100 years of the award.

After the Bible and prayer were removed from public schools around 1961 and 1962, something shifted. Violent crime spiked. Divorce rates climbed. Teen suicides increased. America fell behind in Nobel Prizes. Today, data shows that 32 percent of high school seniors score below basic reading levels.

The tools and technology have improved. But the ability to retain basic life skills, attention spans, and moral clarity has weakened. The common thread is the removal of God's absolutes from the hearing of children.

How Does Faith Actually Grow?

This is one of the most important questions a believer can ask. Romans 10:17 gives a clear answer: "So then, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God."

Faith does not come from religious attendance alone. It does not come from surrounding yourself with faithful people. Even Judas spent over three years with Jesus and still betrayed Him. Faith is the direct result of hearing and receiving God's Word into an open heart.

Proverbs 4:20 says: "My son, attend to my words. Incline thine ear unto my sayings." God is not telling you to attend a building or an event. He is telling you to attend to His Word. When your roots go deep into Scripture, faith rises up into every area of your life. You cannot manufacture faith. You are filled with it as a result of consistently hearing and receiving God's truth.

Does Science Confirm God's Word?

Nearly 3,000 years ago, Isaiah 40:22 described God this way: "It is God who sits above the circle of the earth and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers. It is He who stretches out the heavens like gauze, like curtains, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in."

In the 1920s, astronomers discovered that galaxy clusters are moving away from each other, confirming that the universe is still expanding. Greek philosophers are credited with discovering the spherical shape of the earth around 400 to 500 BC, but God had already described it in Scripture centuries before that.

The same God who orders 200 billion trillion stars moving at speeds of 40,000 to 160,000 miles per hour with such precision that we can predict a comet's location years in advance is the same God who has given us absolutes as a guide for how to live.

What Does the Bible Say About Work and Laziness?

God's absolutes extend into practical areas of life, including how we approach work. Proverbs 10:4 says: "Laziness brings poverty. Hard work makes one rich." Proverbs 13:4 adds: "The lazy person wants but doesn't have. The diligent get their desires filled."

Paul the apostle reinforced this in 2 Thessalonians 3:10: "For while we were yet with you, we gave you this rule and charge: if anyone will not work, neither let him eat."

This is not harshness. It is design. Proverbs 16:26 says: "The appetite of a worker works for him, for his hunger urges him on." God built hunger and drive into the human design on purpose. When that drive is removed, the design stops working. If you do not work, your design does not work.

Why Do Some People Resist God's Absolutes?

Some people resist absolutes because those absolutes contradict the moral framework they have already chosen to build their life on. When someone has invested deeply in a belief system built on shifting ground, truth feels like a threat rather than a gift.

Matthew 7:17 is direct: "A good tree produces good fruit and a bad tree produces bad fruit. A good tree can't produce bad fruit and a bad tree can't produce good fruit." Life is not a buffet of hybrid options. The fruit is either good or bad, and you will know the difference if you are patient enough to watch for it.

As Kevin Hart once said: "If anybody can shake your foundation and take a brick from underneath it and make your building fall down, you got a bigger problem." Jesus called that building on sand. A life grounded in God's absolutes does not need the approval of crowds or cultural trends to stand firm.

How Much Does God Value You?

God spoke five words to describe creating 200 billion trillion stars. And yet He seems to have unlimited words to describe how loved, important, and intricately designed you are. The cosmos was made for you. You were not made for the cosmos.

He predestined you to be adopted as His child. He sent Jesus to die on a cross for you, not for a physical universe. If He can maintain perfect order across the expanse of space, imagine what He can do when given full access to your life.

Matthew 25:29 reminds us: "For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance. But from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away." God's design is for multiplication, not loss. He wants you to retain and grow what He has placed in your hands.

Life Application

This week, make a deliberate choice to attend to God's Word. Not just to attend a service or an event, but to sit with Scripture the way Mary sat at the feet of Jesus. Choose one passage and return to it daily. Let it take root. Faith grows through hearing, and hearing grows through intentional time in His Word.

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect on this message:

• What areas of my life am I struggling to retain peace, joy, or clarity, and have I been filling that space with something other than God's Word?
• Am I building my life on the rock of God's absolutes, or am I allowing cultural pressure to shift my foundation?
• Am I attending to God's Word consistently, or am I expecting faith to grow without giving it the soil it needs?
• Where in my life have I been tolerating a compromise that contradicts what I know to be true?

God has given you life, identity, and the freedom to choose. The question is whether you will retain it. His absolutes are not a cage. They are the foundation that makes everything else possible.
