The Past is Prologue: How God's Miracles Can Rewrite Your Story

We all need miracles in our lives. Whether you're facing a medical diagnosis, financial crisis, relationship struggles, or any other challenge, God's unlimited supply of miracles is available to you. The key to accessing these miracles lies in understanding a powerful truth: the past is prologue.

What Does "The Past is Prologue" Mean?

When we say "the past is prologue," we mean that what has happened before sets the stage for what will happen again. Since God never changes - He's the same yesterday, today, and forever - what He has done, He will do again. His character is consistent, holy, and sure.

This truth can be frightening if your past is filled with failure, mistakes, or sin. But here's the beautiful reality: you get to choose whose past will write your future - your imperfect past or Christ's perfect past.

The Great Exchange: Your Past for His Past

In 2 Corinthians 5:21, we read: "For he made him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in him." This means Jesus, who knew no sin, became sin on your behalf so that in Him, you become the righteousness of God.

You are now magnetized for all of God's blessings. Your legal position before God Almighty gives you the right to write miraculous power onto the pages of your future. This exchange allows you to interrupt the trajectory of your story heading toward disaster and instead launch into His glorious blessings.

Learning from the Centurion's Great Faith

In Matthew 8, we encounter a Roman centurion - a tough, high-ranking military officer - who needed a miracle for his paralyzed servant. This man understood something powerful about authority and approached Jesus with remarkable humility.

The centurion said, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. But only say the word and my servant will be healed." Jesus was amazed and declared, "I have not found such great faith as this with anyone in Israel."

The Formula for Miracles

From this story, we learn a crucial equation: Humility + Trust in God's Authority = Miracles

The centurion called Jesus "Lord," demonstrating humility. He trusted in Jesus' authority to heal from a distance. This combination of humility and trust in divine authority is what Jesus called "great faith."

Why Eagles Must Learn to Bow

You're designed to soar like an eagle, but your story is rooted in grace - God's grace. While eagles soar in high places, they also descend into valleys for food and gather materials for their nests. Similarly, the ability to bow low is often where you find the wisdom and treasure that empowers you to soar into your destiny.

As 19th-century poet William Wordsworth wrote: "Wisdom is oftentimes nearer when we stoop than when we soar." If you're broken at the bottom, there's treasure there for your miracle story.

The Blind Man's Bold Faith

In John 9, Jesus healed a man born blind by making mud with His spit and applying it to the man's eyes. He then sent the man to wash in the pool of Siloam - alone, with mud in his eyes.

When religious leaders questioned the healing and threw the man out of the synagogue, he boldly defended Jesus: "If this man were not from God, he could do nothing." Later, when Jesus found him, the man believed and worshiped Him.

This raises an important question: What's better - being accepted by a society that can't help you, or being healed by a Savior that society rejects?

Six Hindrances to God's Miracles

Understanding what can block God's miraculous power is crucial for your faith journey:

1. Believing Lies

Lies are faith distortions that interrupt God's power in your life. The devil is the father of all lies, and lies and miracles are incompatible. Don't let wrong beliefs obstruct right receiving.

2. Unforgiveness

God has forgiven you, and you must forgive others. Unforgiveness is deadly and can be the root of sickness in your body. Medical doctors can't touch bitterness, resentment, or hatred - only God's forgiveness can heal these heart issues.

3. Unbelief

The children of Israel couldn't enter the Promised Land because of unbelief. You don't need to be perfect to receive a miracle, but you do need faith in God. Fight unbelief with faith statements and refuse to quit the story God is writing for you.

4. Idolatry

Having another god in place of the real God creates a short circuit in your spiritual life. God is jealous and doesn't compete for attention with false gods. You cannot serve two masters.

5. Pride

Pride interferes with miracles and is rooted in deception. Humility submits to truth and allows God to lift you up. Don't waste pages of your life story with pride meant to put others down.

6. Condemnation

Don't tolerate condemnation in your heart - it's toxic. You are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. Have confidence in His goodness, not yours. God is greater than your heart and knows everything, yet He still deeply loves you.

Choosing Your Author

So many people live bound to their past - their ancestry, successes, or sins. Today is the day to choose between your past or, by God's grace, His past. Jesus' perfect life and sacrifice on the cross can be written onto your story through faith.

This isn't just about receiving miracles for yourself. God wants to use you to bring heaven to earth. As His child, you're an ambassador of His goodness and love. Signs and wonders follow those who believe.

Life Application

This week, choose to let Christ's perfect past interrupt your imperfect past. Instead of allowing your failures, mistakes, or circumstances to dictate your future, exercise faith in Jesus' finished work at the cross. Practice the centurion's formula: approach God with humility, trust in His authority, and watch for His miraculous intervention in your life.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Which of the six hindrances might be blocking God's miracles in my life?
  • Am I trusting more in my own abilities or in God's authority to work miracles?
  • How can I demonstrate the kind of humility and faith that amazed Jesus?
  • What lies about God's character do I need to replace with His truth?

Remember, your faith in Jesus' work at the cross is now transcribed and recorded on the pages of your story and written in heaven. God uses your faith to gain access to your present and future. The past is prologue, and today you can choose whose past will write your tomorrow.
